Older adults and people with certain other medical conditions are more at risk of severe illness and death due to COVID-19. As you get older, your risk for developing more severe symptoms increases, with the greatest risk in those 85 and older. In the United States, 8 out of 10 COVID-19 related deaths have been in those 65 or older.

Some medical conditions are known to increase risk of severe COVID-19 illness. These include, but are not limited to cancer, COPD (chronic pulmonary disease), obesity, and type 2 diabetes. There is a wide range of other conditions which may increase someone’s risk of severe illness. These include, but are not limited to asthma, hypertension, being immunocompromised, smoking, dementia, and cystic fibrosis.
